Christmas always starts early in Gotham, given the amount of money to be made and the number of corporate bottom lines depending on sky-high holiday sales. But it’s not all a money game, and part of the fun can even be had for free. Major department stores around town have made it a tradition to create elaborate window displays to celebrate the Christmas holidays, attracting hordes of viewers and tourists. The New York Sun has already weighed in on its favorites, and while you’re at it check out this video on Barney’s windows!
The animated window displays are like little mini-Broadway shows — with narratives, scenery, soundtracks and deadlines. Each department store window display reflects a distinct personality, often in line with the character of the store, whether it be classic and refined, or technologically whimsical.
If you want to do the five major window displays in one swoop, the best path is to walk from Macy’s (West 34th and Broadway) east to Lord & Taylor (424 Fifth Avenue at East 38th Street), up to Saks Fifth Avenue (611 Fifth Avenue at East 49th Street), further up to Bergdorf Goodman (at 57th Street and 5th Avenue), then over to Bloomingdale’s (1000 Third Avenue at East 59th Street).
