While there are plenty of frustrating things about living in Manhattan, finding a taxi cab isn’t one of them (unless its New Year’s Eve). It’s easy: to hail a cab just stand on a street corner and hold out your hand. Whilstling is optional. When a taxi is empty, the numbers on top of the cab are illuminated.
Next question: how much will the fare be? Generally the taxis in New York are strictly regulated by the Taxi and Limousine Comission, which means that the fare you see on the meter is, well, fair. But if you’re wondering how much it costs to get from point A to point B in the city, consult the online taxi fare finder. This is a great tool for calculating precisely how much that trip from Times Square to Far Rockaway will cost, plus tip!
Oh, and in other taxi news, Mayor Bloomberg announced today that the city intends replace the entire fleet of taxis with hybrid-powered cabs by 2012, making it the largest, cleanest fleet on the planet.
