Jane’s Carousel

You can really see the quirky side of New York City in Brooklyn, which is home to the sideshow freaks of Coney Island, countless hipster artists and the Broken Angel. Add to that an indoor carousel. Jane’s Carousel, located in Brooklyn’s trendy DUMBO neighborhood, was bought and painstakingly renovated by Jane Walentas over the course of more than two decades. The vintage 1922 Philadelphia Toboggan Company carousel, which Walentas bought from a defunct Ohio amusement park, debuted at the Dumbo Art Under the Bridge Festival last fall.

Originally Walentas had planned for the carousel to be installed in Brooklyn Bridge Park, but the city wasn’t interested. For now the carousel can be found in small storefront at 56 Water St., open for viewing Friday through Sunday, 12 noon - 6:00 pm. Sadly, the space is too constricted to allow riders, so visitors content themselves with watching the amusement’s 48 horses and two chariots go round and round, lit by nearly 1,200 lights.
