According to a study released by professor Richard Wiseman of England’s University of Hertfordshire, New Yorkers are not the top walkers: despite being famous for its bustling pace, the city that never sleeps ranked only eighth in the world: the faster cities are Singapore, Copenhagen, Madrid, Guangzhou, Dublin, Curitiba and Berlin. In New York, the average walker took 12 seconds to cover 60 feet, which translates into 3.4 mph, according to the Post: “The survey of 32 countries found New Yorkers were speedier walkers than people in London, Paris and Tokyo. Singaporeans were the fastest walkers, at 3.9 mph while residents in Blantre, Malawi, were the slowest surveyed, at 1.3 mph.” If you want to find out something more you can read Prof Wiseman’s latest book, Quirkology (which explores the curious science of everyday life, including the psychology of lying, love, and laughter) or check the results of his survey at the Quirkology website.
